The next SOWING (Science Outreach Working to Inspire the Next Generation) meeting will dive into the Wikipedia Year of Science 2016, an initiative designed to improve Wikipedia’s potential for communicating science to the public.
This happy-hour play/workshop will provide:
1. A brief overview of the Year of Science initiative;
2. A Wikipedia editing crash course, including best practices for science content;
3. Ways NYC area science communicators and educators can hijack Wikipedia for good (instead of evil).
The session will also invite a broader conversation about scientists' and science communicators’ responsibility to contribute to public resources such as Wikipedia, how we can make the outlet more engaging, and the general role of open information platforms in both formal and informal learning environments.
After the workshop, huddle with other creative science communicators, educators, and innovators for a brainstorming + networking session over drinks and bites, led by the SOWING team: Rockefeller University's Jeanne Garbarino and BioBus's Sarah Weisberg and Latasha Wright.
The Simon Foundation’s Education & Outreach division is pleased to host this SOWING gathering.

The mission of SOWING is to bring together local practitioners of science outreach and education in the NYC area to create a cohesive science outreach community. Formal Science Outreach programming is a growing movement, and we aim to bridge the gap between academic science and the general public through science education experiences that mimic an authentic science practice. By promoting effective science outreach and education through curriculum and resource sharing via a centralized repository, as well as providing both in-person and digital networking opportunities, we look forward to accelerating curriculum development and the assimilation of best practices. This, in turn, can inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, while creating a collaborative and supportive framework for outreach professionals.
